When Not to Get Liposuction

Liposuction is a very personal decision. However, there are several things to keep in mind when making that decision. One of the first things you should consider when deciding whether to undergo liposuction is to determine if you are a good candidate.

Liposuction & Weight Loss

You should not undergo a liposuction procedure if you think that it will help you lose weight. This is especially important if you are extremely overweight or obese. Liposuction is not designed as a weight loss tool, rather it is a contouring procedure.

For those who are overweight, the first and perhaps best option is a doctor-assisted weight loss program that will include diet and exercise to lose that fat. After your weight loss, liposuction can then be a final contouring procedure that will help you eliminate those fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise.

Liposuction & Skin Problems

Liposuction can also not help if you have excess loose skin. For instance, if you have loose skin and bulges in the tummy area, liposuction cannot help. There are other procedures that can help you lose that excess skin.

Also, liposuction may not be for you if you have hard, tight skin. Also, those with wavy, dimpled, or wrinkled skin will probably not see an improvement in skin tone. You will however, see improved contours.

Medical Conditions

If you have a bleeding disorder or take anticoagulant medications, you are probably not a good candidate. Also, those with heart disease, diabetes, or other such medical conditions may not be a good candidate.

Having Realistic Goals

You should have realistic expectations about what liposuction can do. Again, if you are looking for a way to lose weight or a large amount of fat, liposuction is not the answer. It is important to grasp the facts that liposuction will provide improvement, not perfection. If you have unreasonable expectations, chances are you will be disappointed with the results.
