Post Liposuction Pain Guide

At St. Louis Laser Liposuction Center, we stress to our patients that they need to understand any possible post-op side effects and the time that is required for recovery after a liposuction procedure. We emphasize that both of these can vary from individual to individual. We want to make sure that our patients understand what to expect.

The side effects and possible pain will often depend upon how much liposuction you will undergo, as well as to which areas of the body. Overall, you can expect to be somewhat sore afterward, but you should be able to function and continue with your normal routine and schedule.

Types of Fat

Some common side effects can include nausea, soreness, inflammation, and swelling. Other effects can include dizziness and a mild fever. You may be prescribed medications for the pain, along with antibiotics to fight possible infection. However, you should avoid aspirin and ibuprofen, as these can cause bleeding that can lead to complications. If you should experience fever, headaches, or any other such signs of infection, you should contact your physician immediate.

You may also notice swelling and minor bruising, which is completely normal. You may also experience some drainage. These effects can last a few days or a few weeks, depending upon how the incisions were sutured.

When Liposuction is an Option

While many will be able to return to their normal routines the next day after surgery, most will need a few days, and longer if you have a physically strenuous job or routine. However, this recovery period will usually not be more than a week.

In most cases, you will be told to where compression garments that will promote proper healing. Depending upon your individual case and treatment area, you may need to wear these garments for a couple of weeks.

Finally, by the second day, you should have settled into a routine that can help with your recovery. One of the main things to keep in mind is that you want to follow all post-operative instructions carefully, as they are designed to reduce any possible pain or other side effects or complications.
